Warandeputten

Warandeputten Oostkamp

In the period 1987-1990, the Ghent-Bruges canal was widened near Moerbrugge and a new movable bridge was built. With the released soil slurry, 10ha of low-lying valley land at the mouth of the Rivierbeek were partially raised. After completion of the works, nature was able to take spontaneous possession of the site and marsh, willow forest and flowery grassland developed. The nature reserve was made attractive for walkers and nature lovers in 2002-2003. Excavations created additional water features and swamp. The name 'Warandeputten' refers to the adjacent forest area 'the Warande'. It is part of the valuable natural areas in the Valley of the Zuidleie, in which the canal was excavated.
